Studebaker Serial Number Decoder

  1. Would someone point me in the right direction of decoding this serial number and confirming whether this is a President or Dictator. I believe this to be a President based on two things, a) the inline 8 cylinder the vin starts with a 7 as opposed to a 5 for a dictator.
  2. 1955 Studebaker Commander. This car’s serial number may look like 16G8-W6 and underneath 5999. 16G- Commander and Champion models produced in 1955. W6- Four door sedan body. 5999- The 999th such Studebaker car to be built. 1961 Mercury Comet. Serial number will look like 1H11S800212.
  3. The first 1950 R5 was serial number R5-42501 and the last 1951 serial number was serial number R5-78578. We do not have documentation for the last 1950 2R5 or the first 1951 2R5. My strong guess, based on 40 years of studying Studebaker trucks, is your truck is a 1951 model because it is within 10,000 units of that year's manufacture.

1964 V8 engine numbering. V8 engines in Avantis and trucks built on and after August 20, 1963 and all those in 1964 Hawk/Lark-type models were not serialized as before, but were stamped with an alphanumeric code (e.g., PK329) indicating car/truck model, displacement, and date of manufacture. A Studebaker Reference Guide 1950. Starting Serial Number: 9G Champion. G-468101 & G-851801. Starting Motor Serial Number: Ser. The first Production Studebaker Avanti, serial number 63R1001, was donated to the Harold E. R1001 came with the second Avanti engine, supercharged # RS1002. Notes:Ref: Service Letter # G-1964-3B, dtd 13 May 1964. SUBJECT: Car Serial Number - Avanti Models. A 63 or 64 truck with either a 259 or 289 has the same casting number head as the R2. With flat top pistons, the 67 cc (Casting 1557582) will give you about 9.0 compression and the 54 cc's ( Casting 1557570) about 10.25 or with dish 289 pistons about 7.5 and 8.5 respectively with the beaded steel head gaskets.

Studebaker Part Numbers as used in Studebaker Parts Catalogs 101

The numbers arrowed to in the picture of the parts shown in the group parts pic are GENERIC picture part I.D. numbers, and mean nothing except a reference number to find the correct group (i.e. Water Pumps) of Studebaker Part Numbers that will contain your actual part Number for your particular year, model/engine, and body type.

Studebaker Part Numbers also have meaning as well, here are the number sequences & examples:

Car -Six Digit early numbers 100,000 up to parts created in 1955: 308958
Car -Seven Digit Numbers for Mechanical Parts 1956 and on: 1547352
Car -Seven Digit Numbers for Body Parts 1956 and on:1312387
Truck -Six Digit Part Numbers up to 1955: 653409
Truck -Seven Digit Part Numbers 1956 & later: 1654081
Early Packard pre '55 Part Number: 458410
Late Packard '55-'56 Part Number: 6484191

The significant digits are a constant, and are in RED.

Basically, the lower the number in a series or group of numbers is the older part: 184556 is a 1934 Dictator Water Pump.

Compare that to 308958 a '55 T/L Lens or 1564580, a 1965-'66 Lark Type Rochester Carb. Kit.

Keep in mind however that if a 188645 Commander Big 6 valve spring was created for a 1936 model which it was, and happens to be needed on a 1963 & '64 Avanti engine, it's number remains the same! [:0]

Also remember that it IS possible to have car parts and their #'s on a Truck i.e. the Lark parts on a Champ cab, or Truck parts on a car like the H.D. Truck engine valves used on Super Hawk/Lark and Avanti.

Parts peculiar to '57-'58 Packard are all Studebaker numbers, EXCEPT the re-used Packard parts like '56 Packard Clipper tail light lenses, Detroit Packard gauges etc. would carry their original PACKARD number.

Mercedes Benz part numbers were unchanged from their original Mercedes number, unless they were used on a Studebaker such as Avanti door locks, or Lark Skytops then they would receive a Studebaker Body part Number like 1358934.

The W after a number indicates Chrome plate
The V after a number indicates Gold plate
The VP after a number indicates Gold plate & Paint
The WP after a number indicates Chrome plate & Paint, i.e. a TT Emblem The P equals Prime.

Some parts have an X and a number following it, at the end of a regular Studebaker Drawing numbered 6 or 7 digit part number.

This CAN be, as in the case of interior trim parts, door panels, arm rests, consoles, seat covers for the COLOR!
1354022X2 = a Blue '63 Lark Arm Rest Kit.

An X with a short number following the part number CAN also be a code for the length, used on Weatherstrips: 298583X5 is not 5 inches, but it does indicate the length.

How to tell a LEFT part from a RIGHT; they start numerically with Right: 1350256 (even), then Left: 1350257 (Odd). Mirror image, (opposite) parts are always R=Even, L=Odd.

Hardware, nuts, bolts, screws, clips etc. that are non Studebaker Engr. Drawing numbered, universal Automotive standard parts called 'Standards' have their own separate set of numbers like: G107828 or 1921X2.

Casting Numbers as raised numbers on cast parts, rarely match a Part Number, and were intended only to identify like parts before final machining and to connect them to their respective Studebaker Drawings. Therefore they will never be listed in a Parts Catalog.

Although some parts were part number tagged when received by the Main Parts Depot, Plant 8 in South Bend, or rubber stamped, MOST all identific.(?)
